Huachuca Crest Maintenance Event
December 5, 2020 @ 7:00 am - December 6, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
Here’s a chance to escape to the scenic Sky Islands of southern Arizona for a backcountry weekend work project in the high country of the Huachuca Mountains on passage 1b. This is a land of aspens, firs and pines with sweeping views across the grasslands and into Mexico.
Participants will need to provide their own backpacking equipment and food. Tools and training will be provided for anyone brave enough to come along!
Proposed itinerary:
Saturday: The hike in will climb almost 2,600′ over 5 miles from the Montezuma Pass Trailhead to Miller Peak on the Huachuca Crest. (It’s just the way the AZT tells people “welcome to Arizona”!) It’s beastly, but the payoffs are many. Some of the most spectacular views on the trail come from this segment, and you’ll be able to say you climbed to the highest point on the AZT! *Note: this is a dry camp. We will likely need to haul the water needed for the weekend in with us.*
We will do trail work along the way and near the crest.
Sunday: Finish trailwork and return to the cars.
What you need:
Participants will need to have gear and experience for backcountry camping including food and any necessary kitchen supplies. Due to COVID, we discourage the sharing of gear and food.
What we will provide:
The ATA will provide tools and training as well as amazing views and a sense of accomplishment.
COVID Protocols:
Please be sure to read our COVID-19 event protocols before you sign up for the event. Due to the protocols, we are not able to provide meals for this overnight adventure. The Summary document instructs volunteers to refrain from participation in any AZT actvity if they have symptoms of or believe they may have been recently exposed to COVID-19. Please montitor your conditions regularly and let us know if any thing changes prior to the event. We’re limiting our crew size to 9 volunteers, so if your plans change please inform us so we can open the spot for someone else!
