National Public Lands Day at Kentucky Camp

Where the Arizona National Scenic Trail passes by the Kentuck Camp Cabin and Headquarters has been the site of humans interacting with nature for more than 10,000 years. The 100-year-old adobe building on the site is only a recent addition to the foothills of Ce:wi Duag (the Santa Rita Mountains), traditional lands of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Join the Arizona Trail Association and the Coronado National forest as we celebrate National Public Lands Day on this culturally rich and incredibly biodiverse landscape.

Participants will work to maintain the trail and preserve this historic site while learning more about the traditional inhabitants of the land and their interactions with native plants and resources. Activities include:

Volunteer trail work on the Arizona Trail including tread maintenance and drainage. Up to 2 miles walking may be required.
Volunteer brushing and vegetation removal at or near the trailhead
Cleanup of Kentucky Camp and nearby dispersed camp areas
Tasting traditional foods
Hands-on demonstration of traditional handicrafts
Camping will be available nearby for those who wish to catch the signature Arizona star show that night (weather permitting)
Tools, PPE and training will be provided – no experience with trailwork is necessary. Lunch and snacks will also be provided to those who register.
