Kennedy Peak Car Camping
December 7, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - December 9, 2018 @ 5:00 pm
FreeAs part of Sky Island Alliance’s work to collect water rights validations for the Forest, we are doing a weekend dayhike to reach an old dam.
Trails in this wilderness are not often maintained. Portions may be washed away by post-fire erosion or overgrown with cat claw. We may have to deal with some steep terrain.
Trip Leader: Bryon
Trip Itinerary:
Day 1 – Drive out to Deer Creek near Klondyke, AZ. Car camp.
Day 2 – Dayhike to Corral Canyon Dam, a bit past Kennedy Peak (5.5 mi one-way, 2200′ gain on the way in, 350′ gain on the way out). Optional side trip to the peak.
Day 3 – Hike 3/4 mi, then explore an area for a purported spring. Pack up camp and head home.
Elevation ranges from 5000′ – 7200′.
Drivers: We will drive our SIA truck that can carry 3 others. Let me know if anyone else has a 4WD or high clearance vehicle you can bring along!
Weather: Here’s a 7-day forecast you can keep an eye on. My guess is that we will likely see highs in the 50s or 60s, and lows in the 20s.
Food: Bring your own, but you can coordinate with others ahead of time. Should be 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and 2 breakfasts, plus snacks.
Safety: Bryon has Wilderness First Responder training. Let us know if you have WFA or WFR. We will also have a satellite communicator that we can use to text each other, any phone or email, or call search and rescue. BRING BEAR SPRAY IF YOU HAVE IT. SIA will bring a couple cans, too.
Water: Bring enough for the weekend.
Gear : Your usual car camping and dayhiking gear!
Springs gear: Make sure to save some room in your daypack for some springs gear (1-2 liters of space).
