Top Ten Reasons to Volunteer on Public Lands
Did you know that according to the Corporation for National and Community Service only an average of 25.3 percent, or about one in four, Americans volunteer their time each year? Arizona ranks slightly below the national average, with only 23.3 percent of Arizonans donating volunteer time in 2015. The good news, however, is that in 2015 more than 1.2 million Arizonans volunteered their time, with an average of 36.4 hours donated. This resulted in a total of 174.36 million volunteer hours, or the equivalent of 4.5 billion dollars, contributed to Arizona’s economy.
Welcome to the Sky Islands
The Sky Islands region, also known as the Madrean Archipelago, extends from the New Mexico and Arizona in the United States through the Northern Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua, and includes the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts. Peaks as high as 10,000 feet (3,200 meters) rise from the desert floor, and contain diverse and isolated ecosystems similar to those found in the Colorado Rockies and other high-altitude regions. The Sky Islands also provide a welcome summer refuge for Southern Arizona residents who want to escape the suffocating heat of the desert floor.
