Trail Maintenance at Saguaro National Park

December 15, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free

The Rincon Mountains and Saguaro National Park are the southern jewels in the AZT crown – nowhere will you find a more spectacular piece of Sonoran desert. Amid the towering saguaros and white granite outcroppings are canyons where water still flows much of the year and hillsides that come alive with wildflowers. The Quilter Trail was completed in 2012 specifically for the Arizona National Scenic Trail, and its construction meets the highest National Park standards. Trail workers love to geek out on the rockwork and attention to detail along the whole length.

However, all trails need constant maintenance to remain in top condition, and the Quilter is no exception. Several years of deferred maintenance have resulted in a route that is overgrown and in some places in danger of disappearing altogether. Volunteers will help to beat back vegetation and repair drainage damage to the trail close to Camino Loma Alta.
