Trail Monitoring and Sign Installation in the Galiuros

December 16, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - December 18, 2022 @ 3:00 pm

As part of our Wilderness Stewardship (Wild Stew) program, we will be hiking sections of trail in the Galiuro Wilderness to identify and map user developed trails (social trails) and install several Wilderness Boundary signs. We will be hiking up to 4 miles per day to access the work areas. Meet us Friday afternoon/evening at the trailhead to set up camp. We will break camp and head out midday Sunday.

Wilderness is the highest form of protection granted to federally managed public lands, and the 90 Wilderness Areas in Arizona are a national treasure. Wilderness boundary signs help protect these areas by ensuring that the public is aware when crossing over into Wilderness, where special protections, regulations, and prohibitions apply. Furthermore, mapping informal, and often unsustainable, social trails can help inform important management decisions in these areas.

The Galiuros are a remote mountain range that few people get to experience. Join Wild Arizona for a unique opportunity not only to explore them, but to help protect this special area as well.
