Peppersauce Cave Graffiti Removal and Restoration

June 22, 2018 - June 24, 2018

Free

Peppersauce Cave is a on the north side of Mt. Lemon, north of Tucson. The cave has over 7300 feet of passages and is in the Coronado National Forest. We are in the middle of a yearlong graffiti removal and restoration effort removing tags in the cave, and we are looking for additional volunteers to help. This is one of the largest graffiti removal projects in the entire U.S. Forest system. The Central Arizona Grotto, the Phoenix area caving club of the National Speleological Society is coordinating the work. So far we have removed some 750 tags and have other 800ish tags to go. With the experienced cavers involved with the project this is an excellent way to learn about caves, geology, how caves and cave formations are formed while helping remove the tags and seeing the cave.

We are using biodegradable solvents, sand blasting, electric and battery powered drills with brushes so you can choose which method of graffiti removal best suits you. We have helmets, gloves, knee/elbow pads, eye protection and dust masks for the workers. Saturday evening is a big, group feed at the Peppersauce group campground, two miles from the cave.

Volunteers under 18 years old will need signed permission to participate. If you would like to help or get additional information, please send an email and I will be happy to respond.
