Pupfish Pond Installation in the Patagonia Mountains

June 26, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

Help install a pond to provide a backup breeding population for the endangered Desert Pupfish at a beautiful setting on a vineyard on the eastern edge of the Patagonia Mountains. This special location along Corral Canyon includes giant ancient emory oak trees, has had endangered Mexican garter snakes show up, has wild turkeys wander through every day, has had tree frogs, and one can frequently hear trogons or cuckoos calling nearby during the summer.

On this specific workday we’ll be installing the underlayment and the liner for the pond, and get the water filling. If enough time and people are available, we may also plant some walnut trees creekside, and hook up the irrigation for a future pollinator garden. No experience necessary to help.

This is part of a larger project to help birds and wildlife near the mouth of Corral Canyon in the Patagonias. Additional project components, to be completed on other days, include planting walnut trees to provide foraging habitat for Yellow-billed Cuckoos, to improve the function of the wash to help prevent erosion, and to install a large pollinator garden on the edge of the vineyard. This project in Corral Canyon will take place at, or near, 785 San Rafael Valley Rd, Patagonia, AZ 85624.
